Our rides are usually Saturday (hill rides) and Sunday (flat rides) and mid-week rides.
Ride details are available on the SLCC StackTeam App. Rides are subject to change over busy periods and in extreme weather conditions (we have hot and wet weather policies – see below).
Wet weather policy
The SLCC Committee advises members not to go out in the wet weather, sometimes we get caught out in the rain, and go to plan B (a shorter ride or stop for coffee), but obviously we want you to be safe. Ride leaders keep a close eye on BOM and if the weather forecast changes and rain is forecast then a planned ride may be changed, postponed or cancelled. Rides are not cancelled lightly (as we love to ride) and ride leaders will collaborate in order to decide the best course of action. The changes, postponements or cancellations will appear on Stack TeamApp.
If you still choose to ride – it’s up to you, but it will not be an official SLCC ride.
hot weather policy
The SLCC rides will be cancelled, when the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts the Adelaide maximum temperature to be equal to 37 degrees celsius or higher in the 4:00pm forecast issued the day before the ride. Again the ride organiser will use their best judgement in consultation with the committee.
Some useful advice re weather:
Cycling is a high intensity sport and high temperatures can facilitate dehydration that can deteriorate into heat exhaustion and result in heat stroke, which pose serious medical concerns.
During periods of high/extreme temperatures it is imperative that riders:
• consider their health and fitness levels
• carry adequate hydration to enable them to complete the ride safely – think about when they will be coming home.
• apply and carry adequate sunscreen or sun protection to enable them to complete the ride safely
Indications of heat exhaustion:
• unusually high heart rate
• dizziness
• headache
• nausea
• cramps
• confusion
In the case of potential heat exhaustion:
• dismount
• sit in the shade off the road
• drink and rehydrate
• notify another rider of your condition and symptoms
• continue to drink hydrating liquids to replace lost fluids
Other Rides
If you think you would like to be involved with the Latte members who follow the Bike SA rides (Grand Slams or Coast to Coast) or the BUPA Challenge rides, there are members who enter these throughout the year. You can either ride with the group or meet us at the finish to debrief about the adventure and your wonderful achievement. Please enter these events and support the cycling community by paying the registration fee, even if you do not use the refreshment stations, the routes are supported with traffic marshals and first aid and in the case of an incident you would be assisted.
